Sometimes there would be a banquet, but not for poor people. People worked hard, had a small dinner at home, and went to bed. No restaurants, no fast food, no run into a store and buy a pound of beef for dinner. They grew it or killed it and ate it. Another Answer: Poor people in towns and cities depended on the medieval equivalent of fast food for a lot of what they ate. Poor town folk depended on prepared food they purchased, because they could not afford the space or equipment needed to cook. This was a result of the fact that chimneys were only invented in the 12th century, so fires were open, and small rooms could not be heated or used. Poor people bought food from street vendors because there were no restaurants, in the modern sense. There were inns, were people could spend the night and eat, and there were taverns, but they were for people with more money. Normal people probably the small restaurants here and there. And people on the go like to stop and buy food from all those merchants selling fruit and bread and soups next to the road.
